I’ve been living on my own, and without any roommates, for 12 years now. That span includes six years in a one-bedroom apartment in West Chester from 1998 until 2004, followed by another six years in my two-bedroom townhouse in Chesterbrook.
Well, those dozen years of bachelor living — which weren’t always completely happy and carefree, mind you — have come to an end. My wonderful girlfriend of nine months, Joan, has moved in with me!
Joan wisely hired professional movers to take care of the heavy lifting. She opted for a local company called USA Express Moving, who handled her belongings carefully and quickly on a very hot Saturday morning in the Art Museum area of Philly. I was sad to say goodbye to the gorgeous, three-bedroom apartment she had shared with her sister Laura and roommate Caitlin, but also very excited about our new life together.
It will take some time to unpack all of her boxes, and I’m sure we’ll both need to be patient as we adapt to our new living arrangements. But I couldn’t be happier to share a home with the love of my life!

Thanks to a generous, last-minute offer from my friend Jeff, I had the opportunity to watch a midsummer Phillies game in the fifth row along the first-base line, followed by a post–Fourth of July fireworks show!
The Phillies offense showed few signs of life for most of the game and trailed 7–1 after 8½ dismal innings. But in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Howard hit an RBI single, the usually disappointing Greg Dobbs hit a three-run homer, and pinch-hitter Cody Ransom (whose name sounds completely fake to me) added a two-run shot to tie the game. And just minutes later, Ryan Howard returned to the plate and hit a two-run walk-off homer to complete a ridiculous 9–7 win over the Reds in 10 innings.
Oh, and the fireworks were terrific, too.
I’m very grateful to have witnessed such a thrilling comeback, and I’m again reminded that “it ain’t over until it’s over!”
